I love Bella Swan. And Katniss Everdeen. And Nikita (and Alex, and Amanda, and Sonya, and even poor little Jaden and the probably never-going-to-recur-Jill). I love Buffy. And Willow. And Cordelia Chase. I love Special Agent Sydney Bristow. And Irina Derevekho. And Nadia Santos. And (I might be the only person who ever loved) Lauren Reed. I love Kahlan Amnell. And Cara. And Nikki. And Denna. I love Lucy Pevensie. And Susan. And Jill Pole. And Polly Plummer. I adore Aravis Tarkheena, Queen of Archenland. I love Hermione Granger (but hate the Harry Potter series). I love Emily Thorne. And Ashley. And Charlotte. And “Amanda Clarke”. I even love-to-hate Victoria, but that’s the point I think. I’m one of the few people who think Padme Amidala is the most interesting character in the Star Wars ‘verse.

I don’t think it has to be Twilight vs. The Hunger Games. Or Nikita vs. Alias. Or Hermione vs. Lucy. If there is one thing I am grateful for with Twilight/Bella Swan/Stephenie Meyer, it’s that it proved once and for all that hell yeah, women can not only carry… they can also make a franchise. Hermione Granger might be the most interesting character in Harry’s story… but it’s still Harry Potter’s story. Kahlan Amnell might be to all intents and purposes the co-protagonist of Legend of the Seeker, but it’s still Legend of the Seeker (Richard). And while Buffy and Alias are cult classics, there’s been too much emphasis on the “cult” and not on the “classic” and the idea that while female-protagonist-shows can be critically acclaimed, they just don’t make blockbusters.

Well, Twilight put paid to that.

Just popping by to give a shout out to the show that has become Must Watch TV for me. I've never been able to get much into Sherlock Holmes - the novels or any of the million portrayals. (I was fleetingly fascinated by Christopher Lee's films when I was much younger but I doubt it will live up to the nostalgia). Arthur Doyle's collection of short stories were essentially procedurals starring - as Hercule Poirot would describe* - a human bloodhound and his biographer. And they weren't really mystery stories as much as they were adventure stories, so I didn't enjoy that aspect of reading a mystery when I try to figure out whodunnit.

Anyway, I enjoyed the first Robert Downing Jr movie mostly because of Irene Adler but since she was [Spoiler (click to open)]killed off in the prologue of the second movie, I couldn't get into the second movie. I watched 6 minutes of BBC Sherlock and switched off. Ah, 2 white dudes and their epic bromance. Yeah, I think I've seen enough of those shows to last me a lifetime.

So Elementary is pretty much a breath of fresh air for me, and then some.

*(No bias, at all I swear!)

I need some Elementary icons. :)

Otherwise known as the best movie of the year.

Please can someone make me a GIF of Bella [Spoiler (click to open)]ripping off Aro's head with her bare hands? Thanks muchly!

Nope, not a Twilight fan though I have a "pet the underdog" kind of soft spot for the franchise. But a fantastic movie is a fantastic movie. And in the first 15 minutes of this film, you get to watch Bella Swan take down a mountain lion with her bare hands and it only gets better. After weeks of waiting for Elena Gilbert to get permission from her [Spoiler (click to open)]sire/ boyfriend to have a drink, you betcha that I needed to see one newbie female vamp/protagonist kick ass.

FAN-GIRLS: Gosh, there are no lady-centric shows, books, movies, etc. Ladies only ever get to be the girlfriend or the mostly dead mother or the villain's girlfriend or the villain's mostly dead mother. This is an outrage and we must protest it!

ME: Too true. But there are some great lady-centric shows like Nikita and Revenge. They are not perfect but they are very lady-centric.

FAN-GIRL #1: Yeah, I've heard of those. Tried half an episode. It wasn't really my thing.

FAN-GIRL #2: Oh, I'll get round to watching it. I have a lot of other shows and books to read right now.

FAN-GIRL #3: Sure, I've watched a few episodes and it's OK. I just don't have much to say about it. (Unlike the #430918301th bromantic show that you see me blogging and writing fic about twice a day, every day except last Sundays).

ME: ....

FAN-GIRLS: Oh noes, Nikita is up for cancellation. They never give lady-centric shows a chance!

Er...

I'm back?

Sort of.

This is such an awkward post to make.

I don't even know if I ever really went anywhere. I've always been lurking in the background.

Long story short - I was in the hospital for a great deal of last year and then recovering for the rest of it. Surprisingly, I couldn't make out much time to post during all this and I sort of fell into the habit of not.posting.

But you know what they say about riding a bike, right?

Have a nice day, everyone.

P.S. I've got a tumblr now: Right now it's just for reblogging Nikita stills and gifs, but who knows?

Am I the only one that remembers how in early Season 2, Katherine could 'rip (either Salvatore) to shreds and get her nails done at the same time'? Because from the way Damon and/or Stephan have been manhandling her post-hiatus, it looks like if the TVD writers have forgotten.

This is an excellent round up of the problems that have plagued LJ of late, which are, in turn an interesting insight into the implications of running something that truly is a global service. The short version: if you are an English language user who is tempted to complain about LJ's recent down time, you should probably shut the fuck up before you embarrass the rest of us. And if you are an English language user who isn't actually *paying* for the service, and you're tempted to complain, please make do so a long, long way away from me, because I'd hate to have to beat you with something heavy.

As annoying as the downtime has been, it has served to bring to light the "other half" of LJ's user base in Russia, and to explain the importance of the journal platform to freedom of speech in that country. Enough so there are those who would see that platform go down. It really makes you think about the difference perspective makes. For us, LJ is a place we keep up with our friends, do memes, roleplay, write. For Russia, it's the place where people get a chance to know the truth of what's going on in the country and for ordinary people to have a voice.

Certainly something to think about, any way.

Come on guys, go vote for NIKITA. Our show is losing to FRINGE which has already been renewed for a 4th season.
Share
I am not posting about NIKITA for a change. (LOL!) Guys, I am currently reading the Forbidden Game by LJ Smith and it is AWESOME!

(Off topic: is it just me or does she look uncannily like Nicci from Legend of the Seeker?)

I don’t know how I almost completely missed all L. J. Smith's books growing up. I read lots of R. L. Stine and Richie Tankersley Cusick but for some reason, L. J. Smith who writes in a similar vein never crossed my part. Unless you count ‘Daughters of Darkness’ which is a kick-ass story about a trio of kickass vampire sisters who run away from their chauvinistic, patriarchal Island of Vampires to live amongst humans; only to be chased by their brother who is like the atypical big bad Vampire Bad Boy; only for him to fall in soulmate with a human girl. Only being soulmates with a human doesn’t automatically redeem him and neither of them like each other much and they have to gradually fall in love in a more natural way throughout the course of the story and it ends with her deciding that she does not want to become a vampire and a creature who kills or is killed (I can hear the anti-Twilight fans cheering!) and him leaving her to redeem himself/become a better person than he is now. And that story really stayed with me way back then but I never got the opportunity to follow up on the series or the writer and it just faded out of my sphere of attention. I didn’t even remember the writer’s name.

Now with TVD being the second-best thing on TV (after Nikita, naturally; and in episodes when the writers remember to treat Bonnie decently), I went hunting for the original LJ Smith Vampire Diaries because word-of-mouth told me that they were “really great!” And lo and behold, what do I find in Wikipedia but that the same LJ Smith wrote Daughters of Darkness which is basically the only ‘Soulmate Story that isn’t a Eros ex Machina’ story I’ve ever read. So of course, I had to read her other books and luck of the draw picked Forbidden Game as my starting point.

And Forbidden Game is FANTASTIC! I am half-way through book one, specifically just after this spoilerish spoilery scene involve kick-ass girls and heartwarming female friendshipsCollapse ) and I’m going, “OMG! Where were you when I ran out of Nancy Drew books to read?”

Whew. I just did my good deed for today and recommended a great book series to the masses. Gotta go and finish the Forbidden Game. If you don’t hear from me again, I guess I lost.

I loved ‘Alexandra’. Loved. Loved. Loved it. As much as I like ‘Alex’, I have to confess that I’ve never been particularly wowed by Lyndsy F but that’s all in the past now. Now, she’s just a fraction of a decimal behind Maggie Q in the list of ‘Why I Watch This Show’. And the relationship between the two women is still so much love.love.love. And here there be spoilers. And highlights. And quibbles. But mostly just spoilers.Collapse )

Gosh, I was going to talk about Vampire Diaries and Clone Wars (I’m all caught up on that one!) and even an episode of Dollhouse that I caught today! So... there is Kaleidoscope news. Because, believe it or not, that story has not been abandoned. I am earnestly working on its conclusion as I type this :D ! Which is great news for me and bad news for everyone else's peace of mind. Expect posts about horrible plot entanglements, insomnia and existential crisis.

But in the meanwhile, this is a snippet of a scene that should have been posted yesterday. It's completely mood appropriate. The movie being out got me into the mood of haunting my old Narnia Fans boards and questing for Aravis/Cor(Shasta) fic. I was rewarded. This is an incredible story. The writer imitates Lewis's cozy, cheerful style of story-telling splendidly and I love the way she handles the relationships between the characters. Prince Cor is such a delight in this story and you just want to give the boy a hug. Aravis is fantastic, exactly as I imagine her to be. Corin is just Corin. But it's really Queen Susan, even though she plays a peripheral role, that is amazingly characterised in this story.

Here it is: Someone Else's Story. The title is taken from this paragraph from the book:

I wish I knew that knight's name, for he must have kept me alive and starved himself to do it."
"I suppose Aslan would say that was part of someone else's story," said Aravis.

Watching NIKITA and enjoying it lots. For a CWTV show, the fan service is relatively low. And talk about a spy show being headlined by not one, but two women. Bad-ass.

Just one little (right!) nitpick: Jaden and Alex better end up being friends, that's all. Or frenemies or friendly rivals or whatevs. But if they decide to go the way of the Anna Espionosa/Sydney Bristow arc in ALIAS, this viewer will not be pleased.

Random observations. Slightly spoilerish for Sherlock.

  • If Agent Olivia Dunham were Agent Oliver Dunham, the fandom would be all over FRINGE like flies.

  • The underlying conspiracy in Undercovers is gradually rearing its head and I’d be bouncing in my seat for joy if not for the depressing news that the show’s ratings are decreasing the likelihood of a full season. I’d be less sour about the whole thing if the show started with strong ratings and then fell, but the ratings were never good to start with. In fact, if what I’ve seen in the blogosphere is any indication, a lot of weblogs that have faithfully covered the most obscure JJ Abrahms productions since ALIAS, have been snubbing the show. I wonder why. *bitter*

  • The SHERLOCK episode ‘The Blind Banker’, which is loosely based on the short story, “The Adventure of the Dancing Man”, ends with the revelation that the sinister gang of Scary Asian Men (one of whom is the brother of the Sexy Asian Woman) is actually being run by the very White Moriarty. What of it, one thinks? It is after all an unfortunate reminder of the times and attitudes in which the short story was written, right? Only the “Adventure of the Dancing Men” didn’t have any Scary Chinese Men or Sexy Chinese Woman or Mighty Whitey. It did have a Scary American Man (as most English-authored books were wont to have) and for some strange reason, no one seems to want to be reminded of that time and attitude anymore...

This is the original TV Promo for Xena S2 Ep. 14, ‘A NECESSARY EVIL’:

“In order to stop the evil, and now immortal, Velasca from hunting down Gabrielle, Xena must unleash an even more depraved immortal to vanquish her---Callisto.”

Once again I ask myself: where was I when Xena first aired? *flails*
Because it wasn’t until hours later that I realized that for the entirety of the forty-something minute long episode, I had not once spotted a guy with a speaking role. Instead, we have two female heroes, a community of female warriors, one female Big Bad, another female Big Bad/Dragon/Vice-Bad/Enemy-of-my-Enemy who teams up the female heroes at first, then betrays them, then joins forces with them, then is tricked into eternal combat with the other Big Bad. And all this happens while women are being turned to gods, erstwhile evil characters become almost sympathetic (until they ask how long it takes for your loved one to die, that is) and the second female hero locks horns with the Enemy-of-my-enemy over the Fridging of Her Husband.

Just think about that for a moment: a ratings-high episode on genre television without a single man on screen.

*dies*

And this is the same episode where Gabrielle ‘I think you’re mistaking me for a pet’ gets to make Ephiny ‘Still think it’s fun?’ Amazon Queen.

So according to io9, Fringe Season 3 is going to go all kaleidoscope on us and jump from 'verse to 'verse from episode to episode. How much do I love you, Show? I watched the first few episodes of S1 with a lot of wariness because my relationship with JJ Abrahms's creative works tends to be... temperamental, to put it mildly. Pick any passage of 500 words or less from any fanfic I've written, and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you'd expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

In other news, the director of Pride and Prejudice and Atonement is making a live-action version of the Little Mermaid. And, just in case you're not sure, that's the original story not the Disneyfied atrocity. I wonder if he'll cast Keira Knightley as the title character?

I don’t think it’s too early to say that this is going to be my favourite movie of the year. I enjoyed the original, it was a favourite of mine growing up, but this one – I love. I can’t remember the last time I went to the cinema twice to watch a movie but so far, I’ve watched the Karate Kid four times (and counting)!

I’ve read a lot of reviews that keep nitpicking about the title (which, for the record, is only Karate Kid in the US of A and Kung-fu Kid almost everywhere else) and I think those reviews are missing the point, or at least, are failing to see the forest for the trees. Bad marketing name aside, this is not really a movie about a martial arts tournament, nor is it a movie that is particularly about China. What Karate Kid is, is a movie about the unexpected friendship between a young immigrant boy and someone who understands what it means to lose his support system, everything familiar to him that he calls home, and live in a society where his intrinsic worth is ignored because he is foreign. The moral of the story is one that will resonate with anyone who has ever experienced prejudice: being foreign, being ‘different’ either by culture or by race is a status. It is not a measure of a person’s worth. All people, regardless of race, culture or background, deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.
