Re-watching Jumper, TF updated
I recorded the movie when it was aired last month and on rewatching it, I've spotted a lot of incredible meta detail that completely went over my head during that first, lone viewing at the cinema. For example, that scene at the end where Luke Skywalker David confronts Darth Vader his mother and finds out about his secret sister Leia Organa just gives me goosebumps. :D It’s clearly meant to sell the sequels and I know that, as a member of the audience, I’m being manipulated but … wow.

So I want to read Jumper fic. I want to write Jumper fic! Does anyone know where I can find fic about David’s mother?

Talking about fics, Thwarted Fate has been updated!

Dude I totally remember seeing this movie on an airplane once! Did he have a sister? I missed that part... I definitely thought it was one of the high points of Hayden Christensen acting.

You should totally write a fic :)

I have watched many great movies on the plane. :) I loved this movie, and I was really looking forward to more, bigger sequels but with all the negative backlash from the critics, I'm not sure if they'll ever get made.

You should totally write a fic :)

*g* I totally want to write a fic about Mary between when she left David and the first time she had to "save" him from the other Paladins. And if they don't hurry up and make the sequels, I might just write them! :D

Heh. It's interestin how Jumper shares some parrallels with Star Wars.

And yay for the Thwarted Fate update! I left my comment on Thwarted Fate at TFN.

To be fair to Jumper, there aren't that many parallels... and even the Darth Vader/Dark Mother one is not 100% identical. But where there are parallels, it is amusing. :D

Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad you liked it. It's interesting how the readers are split between how abusive/physically intimidating Anakin comes across in that scene.

Now that you pointed it out I totally see the Jumper - Star Wars connection!
Hayden can't escape it ;)

Can't say I have gone looking for Jumper fic.
But if you write one I'd check it out ;)

It's one of those squint-to-see connections. :) Did you know that according to the tie-in novel and game, Griffith (Jamie Bell's character) watched his parents die at the hands of David's mother?

ETA: And once again, Hayden plays a powerful young man with mother issues. :D

I didn't know that about Griffin... That is cold.
But I guess he doesn't know David is her son.

Yes, Hayden does ;)

No, I don't think Griffin knows about the relationship between Mary Rice and David or he'd never have teamed up with him even temporarily. And when he does find out, it will make him regard David's betrayal in the Czech even worse than it already is.

A sequel would have been so great: David vs Cox; David vs Griffin; David vs Mary Alice ("I'll give you a headstart, son"); then Mary Alice vs Cox (because you know he's not going to just drop the "so, we've been unsuccessfully hunting your son for eight years now..."; Mary Alice vs Griffin... Heck even Sophie vs David. I can see the little Paladin-in-training honour-killing her brother to redeem her mother's standing with the rest of the Paladins.

So much potential there. :D

I am pretty sure they will do sequels. They talked about creating a whole Jumper universe and are set to shoot next spring. Hayden said he'd do it.

Those are a lot of great story opportunities.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed about the sequels. I recently read an io9 article where the book writer talked about some ideas the director had for sequels. I wasn't very impressed with some of the idea - jumping as a form of time travel... jumpping to other planets. I mean, jumping from one place to another in the world is already cool enough on its own, you know? How about moving away from the cool powers and moving into the inter-personal conflicts? Look at Spider-Man 2 and X-Men 2, they didn't become cooler because TPTB gave the old characters new powers, they became cooler because TPTB gave the old characters new conflicts.

I agree. I skimmed some of that on desiringhayden.net a few days ago.

It should be more about character development not new abilities.

I also saw this:
Liman has previously stated that he would want to use Reflex as the source material for the second film, focusing on expanding the Jumpers' teleportation powers. The book also focuses on Rice's girlfriend Millie, played by Rachel Bilson in the original film, gaining the ability to jump. Liman also mentioned he wanted to include new abilities like jumping to other planets and traveling through time.

I do not want Millie to be a jumper.

Neither do I. But I read somewhere that it's in the books? Though why after rejecting/re-inventing so manythings in the books for the movie, they decide to keep this one. According to Wiki, book!Millie is a research/science geek who "learns" how to become a Jumper. I don't really see movie!Millie being able to fit that arc any more.

Although I went to imdb.com and there's some fan speculation that Millie was already a Jumper in the 1st movie. When David jumps the flat into the river and passes out, then she swims out her ropes and goes to him, they (the imdb fans) say that it's Millie not David that jumps everyone into the library because David is still unconscious when they're in the library and Millie has to slap him awake.

I have to say, I like the theory, it's Agatha Christie-esque (under-estimated character is revealed to have interesting background/secrets) but it's contrived. It doesn't explain why Millie, who's wanted to be a world-traveller since she was a girl, has never Jumped before?

I have to see that ending again....

It doesn't explain why Millie, who's wanted to be a world-traveller since she was a girl, has never Jumped before?
Unless they turn her into a liar who had been jumping all over the world and told no one.

Or they make it like she discovered her power right in that moment of panic underwater....

I don't know. My head is spinning. lol

Unless they turn her into a liar who had been jumping all over the world and told no one.

But she looked so shocked when she saw David jump. It totally freaked her out. No, I don't see how that will work without making her a totally different character.

Or they make it like she discovered her power right in that moment of panic underwater....

Now, this makes more sense, and is more suited to the character. After all, David also discovered his powers when he was in great danger after falling under the ice. It's almost symbolic too - jumping from a near-drowning into the library. :D

I don't know. My head is spinning. lol

*g* I know! When you start thinking about the movie, there's really a lot more to it than meets the eye.

There is so much more to the story. Lots of symbolism, and secrets, and history.... Lots of potential.

It's a pity that the fandom is so dead and apart from a few David/Griffith shippers, no one seems to be writing/doing art for the past year. FF.net has been disappointing but I conducted a thorough search and I salvaged 2 gems from the pit of voles:

The Other Side - a post-movie fic that stars Millie, Mary, and one of the best Jumper vs Paladin fight scenes I've seen on paper. :D

At First Sight - A very short fic that explores Sophie's thoughts when she meets David at the end of the film.

Thank you for the recs. At First Sight was really good. I need to watch Kristen's scene again to see how those thoughts fit with the facial expressions.

When I have more time I'll read the first one :)

Let me know what you think when you do. I really enjoyed Millie in that one. :D

I finally read The Other Side. That was brilliant :D

This was the review I left:
"A friend recommended this story to me. Just wanted to say it was awesome. Well thought out and well written.
Loved how we got to see both sides, the talk of consequences and of having a conscience. Brilliant. :D
(I also love that little Star Wars reference, hehe)"

Thank you for recommending it. Saved it to favorites.

You're welcome, dear. Glad you enjoyed it. So did I. :D
