Livejournal Messenger - should I or shouldn't I?
Since there’s no point signing up to an Instant Messenger service if there is no one to send instant messages to, I’m polling my flist:

Poll #1424575 Livejournal Messenger - should I or shouldn't I?
This poll is closed.

Have you turned on your Livejournal Messenger?

Yes.
1(10.0%)
No, but I will now.
1(10.0%)
No, and I’m not going to. [I’ll give my reason in comments].
6(60.0%)
None of the above. I’ll explain further in comments.

I have that problem with Skype, as well, and that’s worse because it’s my real-life communications medium. But I got round it by setting it to log me in as Away. Then if something seems worth my while, I'll come online for that.

Er... rather deceitful. :o

I had mine turned on and no one else on my FL was ever logged in, so it seemed kind of pointless.

That's what I am trying to avoid. Like when I got a Jabber account for LJ but no one was ever online.

I just tell people I can't talk.

It's not always that easy. *sighs*

Well it is for me, sorry not to have any better advice! Plus if people annoy me I just go offline.

I have various AIM names and Skype. I used to (well sorta still do) have yahoo, ICQ and MSN as well. Another IM would just be... a bit over the top methinks.

That's a very good point there. *ponders*

I just activated it to see what it's like after seeing your post.

So what do you make of it?
From: awehla Date: July 5th, 2009 03:54 pm (UTC) (Link)
Well it didn't seem to do anything, it's just an extra box in the corner and you are logged into both msn messenger or "windows live" as it's called now and LJ messenger at the same time. No one from LJ was logged in at the same time.

Mmm... Thanks for doing the reconnaisance.

I'm with all the other dissenters.
1) people are annoying on IM, as am I when I IM others; you drop in when you're not wanted, you leave just when the conversation gets interesting, etc.
2) unless you're a heavy im-er, no one im's you

And also
3) Have you ever had people you've never seen before stalk you? (Ok, yeah, that's kind of oxymoronic coming from me, but I'm not a guy trying to get into your pants.)

Yeah... but if you do activate it, you should tell us how it goes! Yay for trying new internet features!

lol! At least you're honest. ;)

you leave just when the conversation gets interesting, etc.

That is the most annoying thing, I admit!

I've had lots of stalkers on Yahoo! In fact I had to uninstall Yahoo! messenger because at a time I had more stalkers than my own contacts sending me IMs. I don't understand why ppl do that. It's seriously creepy and annoying.

Nah. I don't think I'm going to. To many smart people giving me smart reasons not to. :D

I rarely use any kind of IM-ing.
moonspinner From: moonspinner Date: July 4th, 2009 08:35 pm (UTC) (Link)
I only use 2 - Office Communicator at work which is like, mandatory, and Skype. And I know that Skype can be very distracting when I'm getting a call/IM from someone when I'm not in the mood to answer that call but I have to because I forgot to sign in as Away. *grrr*

I already pretty much live on YIM and Skype, and have ICQ, AIM and MSN for certain occasions. I just don't know if I want yet another messenger. I have no qualms setting IM programs to Away/Invisible/not even turning them on in the first place if I don't feel like chatting at the moment. But it's kind of annoying to have several different programs going at once. Skype is always on and YIM I turn on a lot. Otherwise, they're all on a need-to-contact-X basis.

But it's kind of annoying to have several different programs going at once.

I only really use 2 IMs - my Office Communicator at work and Skype. And those two alone can be distracting.

Really don't have time for IM. Don't even know how LJ IM works.

I figured out the LJ Jabber last month. I keep it on to get notifications. But no one else seems to use it at all!

I rarely IM, unless it seems worthwhile. The problem with IM is the same as others have mentioned - both sides have to ditch everything they were doing. The conversation can also trundle to a halt because someone has to go out, or something.

*sighs* You all make very good points about this. I think I've pretty much made up my mind about this. :D
