The state of most the unions in the past, and each of us can only hope our own goes better.

Yeah, that line, not in my Bible (which is 54 years old), although there are so many different translations these days that it is bound to be in someone's Bible. The closest thing I can see to that is at the end of Genesis 3:16, "...yet your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you." That was a punishment for eating from the Tree of Knowledge, but when God first made Woman, His intent is stated in Genesis 2:18, "...`It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.'" I don't see that as a "housemaid" kind of line. "Helpmate" maybe, but not "housemaid."

I noticed that the word "servant" is never actually used in those chapters, which leaves those lines open to interpretation, of course.

Forgive me, it is Sunday and I am in a rare theological mood. :)

Oh no, it wasn't in his Bible either. It was a slip of tongue on 'helpmate'. But it made the class laugh for a good 5 minutes.

I don't believe that God made Eve to be Adam's inferior in any way. In fact, Genesis 2 says that 'God made man, male and female he made man.' I think it was after the Fall and Eve's curse that the division set in.

lol! :D Perhaps when it's over, and if you don't mind, I'd love to read your essays on that.

Lovely icon. *g*

Sweet Mother of God... *facepalm* That's just awful. So awful that it's kind of funny.

I'm doing a project on feminist theology this semester, so I'd probably better not get started on this... *rolls eyes*

Tee hee, I can see why that's a valid translation. I mean, the Bible was written by men with different cultures...

But you know, you can also make the observation that marriages where the woman is dependant work out better... I mean, imagine a partnership where you weren't always fighting over who's right. It actually doesn't suck so much if the guy's responsible... but I guess that doesn't work in this day and age no more.

Although it might in other countries I guess...

I agree. It's the opinion I share with Lucas that the best kind of government is a benevolent dictatorship. Having the woman as a dependent partner to a good, responsible man is actually not a bad thing. There's nothing wrong with someone being in charge - two captains can't run a ship and all that. But when the power is abused then that's where the problem is. And the sad fact of life is that it's not very easy to find someone who doesn't get corrupted by any kind of power.

My personality is one that 'takes orders' very easily. Maybe it's got something to do with school - all those years of being bossed around. Someone tells me to do something & i just do it without thinking to say "no" or "do it yourself."
I hate making decisions & i'm not competative or ambitious.
If i really want somthing i can be as stubborn as hell but most of the time i just go with the flow...
i like the idea of helpmate. one of our neighbours has his own bussiness so his wife doesn't work out of the house but she does all the accounts ect.
