Update of Sorts.
Children of Shmi was archived at TFN! Special thanks to my dear fialleril who for some unfathomable reason was not credited as the cover artist! I've sent mails to the editors asking them to correct it though. Hopefully, it should be cleared up soon.

I opened my Kaleidoscope notes yesterday and nearly had an asthma attack. The story is still here (taps skull) but I have no idea when I'll ever have enough time to buckle down and continue it. Well, never say never. I did get a little inspiration from Pirates of the Caribbean III, particularly one scene that uncannily paralleled the whole mythology of Kaleidoscope. Weird. Perhaps I'm not as uniquely crazy as I thought.

I watched Spider-Man III on opening night and I have to say that it was an embarrasment of riches. That movie could easily have been two great movies instead of one rather tedious one. Ah well. I still enjoyed it and I'm definitely completing that DVD collection. However... Spider-Man IV? And on the subject of Trilogies-Plus-One, PotC IV? Talk about killing the goose that lays the golden egg.

I just finished J. R. R. Tolkien's posthumously published tale, Children of Hurin. It made me think deep thoughts - always a good sign for the book and a bad sign for me.

I have a plot bunny for a Curse of the Black Pearl alternate reality story. Heaven help us all!

OMG! I think we need to get involved with some kind of fan fiction 12-step program for the chronically distracted.

:D

I tried to vote for Mulan as your DVD pick (basically because it is one of the more under-rated Disney films) but I won't blame you for picking Mermaid instead. On another note, which is probably related to all of the lj-technical-silliness going on, I voted but it said I wasn't allowed to see the results, so if there seems to be 2 extra votes for Mulan, those would be mine.

Sadly I have to admit that I was disappointed by both Spidey 3 and POTC 3. Peter's "Saturday Night Fever" bit in the middle was embarrassing and Venom was very under-used. It suffered from "Too Many Villains" syndrome that killed the first series of Batman films. POTC3, on the other hand, is a classic example a movie made based on the first draft of the script and need a rewrite so bad that there were times it hurt to watch (although that may have something to do with my front-row seats, too). However, the film is just ripe for missing-scene fan fiction and the like! I say Godspeed and follow the wind where ever it takes you and write your CBP story!

An embarrassment of riches as I put it. Too many characters and plot lines, too little time to do any of them justice.

And WORD about the POTC 3 movie. Absolute word. It's painfully obvious that they started shooting without a script. On the other hand, would it have been any better than POTC 2?

It's not missing-scene fan fiction I'll be writing though. *worried* It's an alternate reality of CotBP. Will you still be keen?

Oh, by all means go ahead with your CotBP fic. I would be very interested to see what you can do. :)

Thanks for the vote of confidence, mate.

I'm looking for a beta. Would you mind volunteering?

Sure, why not?

Will keep a weathered eye out for it. ;)

I voted for Mulan (or at least I tried to—not sure if it went through, as LJ seems to hate me at the moment). Basically, I just love that movie. Mushu is love.

I saw Children of Shmi up on the archives and was muchly excited. ;) I do supposedly have an account there, so hopefully the mods will clear up the business about the cover art, but I'm not too worried about it. I'm just glad they finally updated the archives! (I kept checking it for over two months before your story finally appeared!)

Here's hoping the Kaleidoscope bunny attacks you viciously in your sleep and refuses to leave you alone. ;) There's been a severe dearth of good fanfic lately, and I'm beginning to suffer moonspinner withdrawals.

Reading Tolkien is always a good recipe for encouraging deep thoughts. ;) Glad you enjoyed that book!

There's something wrong with the poll. I'm working on how to fix it...

I really like Mulan. The best thing about it was that: a, it wasn't a love story; and b, her mother was still alive!!! (Disney mums seem to be either dead before or during the story, have you noticed?) But I have a soft spot for Little Mermaid, too.

I'm putting pressure on the editors. I hope they correct it soon.

lolol!

Have you read 'Children of Hurin' yourself?
fialleril From: fialleril Date: June 7th, 2007 01:38 am (UTC) (Link)
I have noticed the disturbing lack of mothers in Disney movies. My sister and I have a running joke about it, actually. :)

I haven't read Children of Hurin as such, but I have read all the Turin stories in Silmarillion, </i>Book of Lost Tales</i>, etc. I heard that Children of Hurin was a compilation of those, but I'm not sure. Does it have any new/previously unpublished material?
moonspinner From: moonspinner Date: June 7th, 2007 06:52 am (UTC) (Link)
Yes, it's mostly unpublished material with the minimum of editing from Christopher Tolkien. It's based off a few references in the Silmarillion and Lord of the Rings. It's an entire novel, not just a collection of essays/short tales like the Silmarillion. And it's quite good.
fialleril From: fialleril Date: June 8th, 2007 03:08 am (UTC) (Link)
Well then. I'll have to add it to my reading list. :)

OMG! i was obsessed with The Little Mermaid when i was a kid. I use to watch it & rewind it & watch it again. drove my mother insane.
I liked Spiderman 3.

I loved Ariel. Now, I think she got away too easily for being a spoilt brat and defying her father. There's a reason why the Anderson story didn't have a happy ending.

Little Mermaid, for sure. Better movie, and a lot better music! You can't go wrong with Ashman/Menken songs.

Spider-Man 3 was a mess, but I still liked it. I kind of want another one just so Bryce Dallas Howard can come back as Gwen. She was terrific and way underused.

Pirates 3 was also kind of a mess, but I did enjoy it. Neither Pirates nor Spidey was "filling," though. Maybe Ocean's 13 will finally be the threequel not to fall short. (I hope.)

I know exactly what you mean. And word on BDH. Gwen was so blonde, it hurt my eyes. And I don't meant just her hair. She was sweet and nice and affectionate and girly. Loved her character. I'd have loved to see her hook up with Peter but sadly, that ship has sailed.

I never got into 11 or 12 so I guess I won't be able to appreciate 13 even if it is good.

They need to figure out a way to do an AU movie or something, because Tobey and Bryce crackled together. It would be a shame to waste all that potential just because mopey MJ was the end game.

Perhaps Mara Jane could be killed off in Spidey 4? It's the best way to start a new trilogy arc.
knight_ander From: knight_ander Date: June 5th, 2007 05:13 pm (UTC) (Link)
Imo, Ocean's 12 fell so short that Ocean's 13 would be a guaranteed improvement.

(edited for grammar and the like)
