*g* Still on a flash drive at the moment but soon to be in an email to the beta. Expect an update Wednesday-ish? *g* Sorry! I had to write a test this morning and it was bad enough that I took time out to write fanfic!

What's the story?
It's the sequel to a story called 'Mirror Darkly' and basically, it's all about life in a topsy turvy GFFA where the Sith are legitimate rulers of the galaxy, the Jedi are rebels, Padme is some sort of Jedi Guardian and nothing's really as it seems.

That certainly sounds cool
Someday when I have some time I'll take a look.

So... Does that mean I'll be getting an inundation of e-mails soon? *puppy eyes* I certainly hope so!

What can I say? I like being able to read it before anyone else. *chuckles evilly* Well, that and I do enjoy betaing your work. ;)

I'm *so* behind on Kaleidoscope, I think. I plan on doing a marathon read as soon as uni eases off a bit. I'm looking forward to catching up. :D

Awww... *hugs* But you shouldn't worry too much. I haven't updated it in close to ... yikes! six months!!! There isn't that much to catch up, unfortunately.

*squee*

I just started reading "Through a Mirror Darkly" this weekend. I can't believe I didn't read it sooner. I'm enjoying it so much. I can't wait to catch up and read the new chapters.

*bounces* I owe you plenty hugs and chocolate for your feedback! I opened my Inbox this morning after a test (long story) and my frown just melted away. Thanks!

I am *really* enjoying the story. Feedback is the least I can give you for the absolute joy of reading good fic. ;)

I'm not well read in the Star Wars universe. Part of it is because the first few times I went looking for stuff to read I was horribly disappointed and the part of it is because once I started writing, I wanted to know that my ideas were my ideas and I didn't want to be too heavily influenced by fanon conventions.

But now that I feel like I really know what my star wars stories are at heart, I am SO happy to be able to read other people's writings. I have virtually no exposure to Star Wars AUs apart from my own and I have to say your concept is so incredibly appealing. I am dying to learn more about the universe.

I think it was very smart of you to stay away from fanfic while you did your own - for both the reasons you mentioned. I have to ask though - I am curious how you became a SW fan. Most of the fans I've met are either old time OT fans whose interest were revived with the new movies or new fans that were reeled in by the PT. I think you're in the latter but I've never met someone 'new' this long after RotS. Not that I'm complaining - not in the least! You're a breath of fresh air to a dying fandom. I love your stories. They are totally original and yet completely plausible Alternate Realities. And, take my word for it, Padme writers who can satisfy my sometimes unreasonable standards *g* are few and far between. I think there are only a handful (literally not up to 5) people who've been able to write her impressively enough for me. And yes, I know that sounds arrogant! What can I say? She's derided so often by fandom that I feel protective about her character.
Anyway, all I'm saying is that you're a fantastic writer and you're doing wonders for my interest in SW fandom so please keep on writing!

I'm glad you're enjoying Mirror. I really had a lot of fun writing something so completely oddball and I think it shows. *g*

I am curious how you became a SW fan

I have *always* been a SW fan. Huge, huge SW nerd. I have literally seen the OT movies hundreds of times. The PT I was really excited about at first, then then TPM just really fell short for me. AotC was okay, I really liked parts of it, but it didn't suck me in.

Then I saw Hayden Christensen in Life as a House and he absolutely, completely destroyed me. OMG. I *love* that movie. I went back and re-watched AotC and viewing Anakin through the Sam (LAAH) filter really helped me warm up to the character and his angst. I loved RotS as long as I block out the Lucas dialog.

As far as how I got into the fandom ... eh. It was a meandering path. Like I said, on a few occasions I tried reading stuff and most of it just really wasn't worth the time. I wrote extensively and was very active in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel the Series fandoms. But once the shows ended, they died a quick death. I got involved in the Stargate SG-1 fandom, but after Richard Dean Anderson (Col. Jack O'Neill) left the series, again, my enthusiasm waned.

So I was pretty much without a fandom to call home for quite a while. Which, really was fine, because I had a new baby. But she's older now and I really, really missed writing and fandom in general and I'd had a few SW ideas lurking in the back of my head for a while, so I just decided to write them and see what happened.

Here I am. (and wow, I totally hijacked your journal. sorry)

Aww. And thank you for the comments on my Padme. That really does make me relieved that I'm not more well read. I love Padme. And weak women do nothing for me. I was talking to another SW writer a few weeks ago and she mentioned there are lots of Vader-finds-Padme-after-ROTS-and-abuses-her-terrribly fics out there. Again, I'm glad I'm not more familiar with that aspect of the fandom. I don't buy it. For all of his myriad issues, I don't see Vaderkin as a rapist, or someone who would get off on torturing someone he loved. I don't think he shied from doing what was necessary, but I don't think he was a psychopath.

Anyway, I'll stop rambling about myself and say that the more I read of Through a Mirror Darkly, the more I love it. Seriously. I quoted the line about him tasting Padme's blood. And really I'm not sure if it's all my time in the Buffyverse or maybe I'm just broken, but I LOVED that line beyond reason. I seriously laughed out loud in glee. It made me so happy.

It completely shows through that you had fun writing that story and honestly, those are the stories that are the most fun to read.

Wow! I’d never have guessed! I just leaped to the conclusion that you’re a PT recruit because of your new stuff. Silly me! HC was stellar in Life As a House, wasn’t it? It isn’t really my favorite movie (too depressing for rewatches) but I’d never have watched it at all if he hadn’t starred in it so brilliantly.

So I was pretty much without a fandom to call home for quite a while. Which, really was fine, because I had a new baby.

As much as I wish you’d been writing a lot earlier (and leaving me a lot more of your stuff to read), I’m also very, very glad that you came in at this point of time in fandom. I think there’ll be revived SW interest soon with the Clone Wars and the new TV show coming up next years, but right now we’re in a rut. Some of the best writers had already started moving on to Harry Potter, and after the 3rd movie, a lot of them left for good. And for someone like me who’s inspired a lot by what I read (not so much in ideas but in enthusiasm), that was horrible.

Feel free to hijack my journal any day!

Aww. And thank you for the comments on my Padme. That really does make me relieved that I'm not more well read.

LOL! Sometimes I wonder how many people dislike her because they really do have reason to or how many dislike her because of bad fan-fic and bad attitudes that some people in fandom create.

Warning though: Vader in ‘Mirror’ is a certifiable psychopath. I’m not saying that he is, just that if he lived in our side of reality, there’s more than enough evidence to get him locked up in a madhouse. *g* And I’m glad you liked that line. I still remember how I wrote it – with a wicked grin on my face knowing just how much it’d shock people.

It completely shows through that you had fun writing that story and honestly, those are the stories that are the most fun to read.

Lol. Don't get me wrong. When I was little, I was all about Princess Leia and Luke and Han. But the older I get, the more it's all about Vader. I adore Vader beyond reason. And as much as I enjoy reading other author's take on his suited post-RotS and post-Padme's death existence, it isn't something I care to write. It's too dark. When I write, there has to be the hope of a reconciliation with Padme, of some future that involves her.

I can definitely see how it's too dark for some people, but that movie just nailed each and every one of my kinks. His drug problems, the dysfunctional family, little boy lost, finding connections to other people (his parents, his girlfriend), skirting the edges of how low a lost boy can fall (sex for drugs), his own sexuality, his connection to his younger siblings, his reconnection and then abandonment with his terminally ill father. Gods, I just love the emotional material traversed in that movie.

;) But I do enjoy the broken quite a lot.

Some of the best writers had already started moving on to Harry Potter, and after the 3rd movie, a lot of them left for good.

Yeah, I can definitely see that. The same thing happened with Buffy. Everybody flocked to HP or Supernatural (I'm not interested in either fandom). The few SW authors I found early on that I liked had already left for HP when I stumbled across them :(

Warning though: Vader in ‘Mirror’ is a certifiable psychopath.

LOL. I should clarify. I have no trouble with an AU Vader with a soul blacker than the darkest night. Hee! In fact, I enjoy it quite a bit. Your interpretation specifically has me absolutely enraptured.

I do have trouble with the scenarios that take everything through RotS with the exception of Padme's death as canon and then without any real progression of his character, have him turn into this brutalizing monster. As if the suit miraculously involved a personality transplant.

If an author can show me the character's descent, I'm all on board. But the writers who just toss out these scenarios without any real exploration or character growth and change are not my cup of tea.

ITA. You perfectly described why I love that movie so much and why I cry every time. All the performances were great but Hayden's was just wonderful.
And it is true about seeing Anakin through the Sam filter. It does help.
Even if the lines he had to say AotC make you roll your eyes. LOL

Not in the least! *g*
I don't dislike the movie because it's sub par. The story was building and the acting and directing were flawless. I just don't care for sad-ending movies, that's all. *shrugs* Enough sorrow in the world and all that. :p But Sam was phenomenal. That's one of the reasons I'm so looking forward to Jumper. Hayden C doesn't feature in as much movies as I'd like. :p

I really wish they would release Awake and Virgin Territory already :(

I like though that he doesn't take every role thrown at him and chooses things were he doesn't get type casted as the angst teen.

I am so in the mood to have a Hayden dvd marathon now LOL

I feel just the same. One of my favourite SW writers is fernwithy and her stories on Vader in the OT and beyond, in all his suited glory, are some of the best fan fic ever. But I could never write him that way for the same reason why I can't rewatch Life As A House. I want my happy ending, dammit! *g*

fernwithy has moved on to HP land too. :(

LOL. I should clarify. I have no trouble with an AU Vader with a soul blacker than the darkest night. Hee! In fact, I enjoy it quite a bit. Your interpretation specifically has me absolutely enraptured.

Oh good. Just checking. The way I see it, Mirror! Vader enjoys being a Sith so much, he's almost not-Dark. *g* Of course, Padme had to come along and confuse the poor boy! :p

Totally agree. I've noticed that a lot of people who write post-RotS Vader that way usually saw him as the spawn of Satan as far back as TPM. I, for one, would never touch such a story with a ten-foot pole!
indiefic From: indiefic Date: September 13th, 2007 02:49 pm (UTC) (Link)
Oh, I totally agree with you on fernwithy! Her stories that feature Leia and Vader, specifically "Father's Heart" and "The Only Question" just destroy me. They are so painful to read, but so absolutely beautifully rendered. I *love* reading them ... but yeah, I could never write those stories. And yeah, by the time I found her, she was firmly entrenched in HP. Drat!

jedinemo too has some *amazing* character pieces with the suited, tragic Vader which are a joy to read. But yeah, I'll leave the writing to them because I don't think I could do it.

I have to have my Vaderkin and Padme smoochies ;)

The way I see it, Mirror! Vader enjoys being a Sith so much, he's almost not-Dark. *g*

LOL! Too true. Surely that much joy can't be all bad ;P

Oh, you just nailed it for me. Yeah, I completely agree. I read one fic a couple of years ago that was A/P set during AotC. And now, in retrospect, I think it may have been written by one of the AAEF mods (figures, heh). Anyway, IMO, it was AWFUL. It painted Anakin was this manipulative, duplicitous evil little creature who at his core was intent on twisting and compromising and breaking down Padme to the point where it was like he didn't even view her as a person at all, simply as a possession, something he wanted to conquer. And why for the love of god, would you go there? I'm completely confused as to why someone would find the A/P or V/P pairings compelling if that's truly how they saw the relationship. I love that he's flawed and human and conflicted and that he unintentionally messes everything up beyond even his wildest fears. But if there's no hope of redemption in him, then why bother?

Anyway, I digress.

I know the one and yes, it was awful and the excess of mind-rape porn didn't help it in the least. The awful thing is that there are a lot of stories like that. I even ranted about them once here. Now with all the years :p of life experiences beneath my belt since I wrote that, I wonder if we shouldn't be less ticked off by the writers of such 'romances' and more concerned for them. If that's how they view true love, then something went very wrong somewhere...
