Rupert Grint hasn't finished OotP.
I saw this on mugglenet.com... I remember that Daniel Radcliffe was casted before he had ever read about the HP books. I have nothing against casting non-fans to enact a famous fictional character but... It sort of recalls to me the Natalie Portman vs. Long time SW fans like Kiera or Anna Paquin as Amidala Debate.

Do you think Dan's performance in the first 2 films would have been different - better - if he had been a long time Harry Potter fan? And now that Rupert is the face of Ron, isn't it rather unprofessional of him not to have studied the most reliable source of information on his character - the books?

Hey, an actual journal entry! :D

Far as being a fan affecting a performance - I think it does help sometimes, as it means you're guaranteed an impression of how the character's supposed to be. However, I'm not sure being a long time fan would have helped much in Dan's case - he'd still have been relatively inexperienced, which I think was the big factor in his earlier performances (though I didn't mind him in PS or CoS). I know Richard Harris never read the HP books at all, and somehow I doubt he was the only cast member who never did.

That said, I am surprised Rupert hasn't finished OotP yet, considering how much he's said he loves Ron (heck, he auditioned as a woman in his tape to get the part!), and that he is a primary character. However, he's still got time before he does OotP (if he does do it).

Which begs the question if he actually loves Ron, or if it was just a line he used to get the part...

Yes. And actual journal entry! ;)

Hmm. With the interviews I've seen of him, he does seem to - he's always talking about how he identifies with Ron, etc. - but I'm hardly an expert on human behavior, let alone his. ;)
