I just don’t understand…
Why everyone hates Paris Hilton. The way I see it, people’s biggest grievances against her are that she’s rich, blonde and an exhibitionist.

Speaking for myself, I can think of a lot worse offences: murder, rape, paedophile, blasphemy....

*shakes head in puzzlement*

I don't think it's her they hate so much as the media paying too much attention to her.

But isn't the media just giving the public what they want? Let's hear more about her so we can 'boo' and 'hiss' at her latest escapade...

Noone would have heard of Paris Hilton except some Internet perverts if the media hadn't overexposed her in the first place. They convinced the public it's what they want.

*shrugs* I didn't hear about her until Simple Life aired in my country, and then I was more interested in Lionel R's erstwhile unknown daughter.

I think my biggest fear with PH hate is that it's uncannily like Princess Diana's own love/hate story with the public/media. *sad face* Sure Paris is handling things better... for now...

I don't care for her because I think she comes across as utterly talentless, vapid, and spoiled - but I don't hate her. Definitely not worth all the attention the media wastes on her.

Mmm.... I can't see how she comes across that way (personally I thought she and Nicole were playing up the dumb blonde role for Simple Life), but I'm not I agree or how we can really know someone we only see in magazine and E! news captions...

I never claimed to "knew" her - just that I don't care for the image she projects, one she certainly doesn't try to dissuade, doing things like getting wasted and carrying tiny toy dogs around in $10,000 pink purses. ;) And I do definitely disagree that there's not enough material out there to form an opinion on her talent. Even on Veronica Mars, when she was playing a rich, flufftastic blonde, which shouldn't have been a stretch, I didn't find her a convincing actress.

I don’t think she projects a negative image as much as the media portray her negatively, constantly shining the spotlight on her (very human) goofs and ignoring her more worthwhile accomplishments. And I watched the episode where she featured and sure, she was no Kirsten Bell, but I didn’t think her performance was that bad.

I think we should agree to disagree on this one.

It's totally jealousy. Everyone wishes they were the center of the public's eyes. It's not even a bad thing, it's done so ubiquitously... Everyone hates being a wallflower. No one's jealous of murderers and rapists and pedophiles cuz people can't relate to them.

You know what? That really makes a lot of sense. It's like Diana: 'we love and destroy at the same time.'

Cool icon, btw. :D

I don't think I've ever paid much thought to Paris Hilton. There are definitely worse offences, and if people really feel the need to be outraged by something, perhaps they should focus on bringing an end to the injustices in our world. The current genocide in Darfur comes to mind...

*shakes head in equal puzzlement*

I think shes funny, in her own way, so i don't mind her escapades. I just don't like her songs.

*shrugs* I don't hate her, and I don't care for her either but she's getting on my nerves sometimes, probably because she embodies the Rich!spoiled! brat who wastes money on fashion and all and raves about it in magazines while there are people out there who can't even eat . So it's not her per se, but rather what she represents if that makes sense...
moonspinner From: moonspinner Date: October 5th, 2006 02:20 pm (UTC) (Link)
I do understand that but... *shrugs* that's life, isn't it? We can't - shouldn't dislike someone for being born rich anymore than we should dislike someone for being born poor.
vanimy From: vanimy Date: October 5th, 2006 02:26 pm (UTC) (Link)
It's not the fact she's rich that bothers me, it's the way she's almost insulting with her behavior, it's hard to explain. But well, sometimes you just dislike some people, even when you don't really know them. *shrugs* I don't like her, but I don't hate her either. She's just a spoiled brat to me. :P

Well I know she likes her parties --- but so does every college freshman, who really can't afford to spend the money or take the time off their studies...

lol! Well, I guess it's one of those things we'll have to disagree on. *g*

I have to agree with everything vanimy says about Paris. And compare her to some of the Manhattan Socialites and she really comes across as nothing but a spoiled rich kid who craves the spotlight, flaunts her money and wastes it on shopping and partying. Regardless if she's that way or not, that's the image she presents. The fact that she compares herself to Marilyn Monroe and considers herself this generation's blond bombshell icon rather disgusts me too.

I have a lot more respect for her sister, Nicky, who has her own clothing, jewelry and handbag line. (All of which my daughter loves and wants. *shakes head*) She's also buying and renovating rundown hotels.

Possibly, if Paris did something productive that makes her known for something other than partying and spending money she might have more respect than she does.

It's not really a crime to a (self-proclaimed) blonde bombshell icon. Nor is there anything wrong with spending your own money. Paris being rich doesn't make the rest of the world poor.

As for productive things... She cut her own album this year, starred in a movie, was the star of a TV show for 4 seasons... and it wasn't Nicky that had lived down the embarrassment of having a private activity broadcasted on the Internet.

But I think this is just something we'll have to agree to disagree.

Paris is, dare I say it, a Gatsby-girl. Scott Fitzgerald would have loved her.

She's also one of the biggest names of people who become celebrities for no particular reason with the exception of being on "reality television." You may have thought The Simple Life was a reality show, but Paris was only "playing a character" on the show, that wasn't really her. (I swear to God, she actually said that!) Paris proves that you don't have to have talent to be a celebrity.

When you think Hilton, you think classy, (albeit a bit pricey) respectable hotels, right? Do you honestly think classy and respectable when you hear a reference to Paris? Pricey, maybe, but definitely not classy and respectable.

Honestly, what was her break-thru moment of fame? Not as a glamourous runway model, not as a successful perfume or jewelry designer. No, Paris came to prominence via a pornographic home video made by her and released by her sleazy ex-boyfriend/co-star.

Look, if Paris had any real talent (besides car-washing, looking bored and sexy at the same time, sucking ****) then people might cut her some slack. But there's nothing there! The girl gives dumb-blondes a bad name! You'd think those born into privilege would have better opportunities to do something with their lives or to make the world a better place. But celeb-utants like Paris just don't give us a reason to believe that the rich are good for anything, which is a somewhat depressing thought.
moonspinner From: moonspinner Date: October 6th, 2006 01:12 pm (UTC) (Link)
Mmm... I've never read Gatsby.

I won't say she doesn't have talent. She didn't lip-synch that summer hit. And though it's definitely shows bad judgement to go out with the kind of sleazeball that tapes, then distributes your bedroom activities, I see it as a plus not a minus to her that she's managed to live that down. If I were in her shoes, I'd curl up and die and half the world isn't watching and waiting for me to fall flat on my face. Just a few people here and there and they had halitosis. *g*

Anyway, all I'm saying is that Paris's minuses get more attention than her pluses. And even if she is as vain, useless as people say she is.... So What? I can think of worse crimes. It doesn't take anything from me that she's talented. It's not like if I was angling for the spotlight with her. And it still doesn't explain the whole 'love to hate' thing she gets from people. If she's so bad then people should ignore her, and not hound her to discover more badness about her. :D
