Preview: Jumper [2008]

I haven’t been this excited about a movie since Pirates of the Caribbean 3!!!

Actually, that wasn’t too long ago, but you get what I mean. It already had all the right elements – sci-fi/fantasy, the conflict between Homo superior vs. Those Who Fear What They Cannot Understand, Samuel L. Jackson and Hayden Christensen! And then, then they add Rachel Bilson (a.k.a. Summer from the O.C.) into the cast!

Here are the screen shots from the official website.  Feast your eyes!

Hayden as David (the lead Jumper), somewhere in Egypt.  Intense!

Bad-ass SLJ as Roland, the Chief Head-Hunter of the Jumpers (a.k.a. Paladins).

The lovely Rachel Bilson as - shock! - David's love interest Millie. *g*

There's also a co-Jumper called Griffin, David's long-lost mother and a couple of redshirts. *g*

ETA: Of course there a few detractors at IMDB wanted to bash HC as the worst choice for David  *sigh*  but over all, most people came to his defence and even got the OP to eat some of her words.  In fact, people seem psyched for the movie!   And I haven't even read the books!  I.  Can't.  Wait. *g*

ETA: Check out the new Millie icon!

This does sound promising - I hadn't heard of it or the books it's based on before. The concept of 'Jumping' reminds me a little of the main character from The Time Traveller's Wife.

It'll be good to see another Hayden movie... :D

That's what it reminded me of. In both mythologies (?), the ability to jump (through space or time) is genetic. Cool. Did you know the Time Traveller's Wife will be made into a movie that will star Rachel MacAdams? Another actress that I fangirl! *g*

And of course, it's always good to see another Hayden movie. I haven't watched Factory Girl yet. ;)

I've been watching this one for a while because I read and loved "Jumper" quite a while ago. In fact, Stephen Gould and some of his mates keep a very interesting blog here: http://www.eatourbrains.com/EoB/

I re-read "Jumper" a few weeks ago ( I finished the last pages while lazing in the car in line waiting for the Ferry to Martha's Vineyard, in fact) and liked it even better the second time. What I love most about the story is that it is first and foremost a "coming of age" story about a very interesting character. Yes, we love those. [cough *Anakin* cough] [cough *Harry* cough] The sci-fi aspects are secondary - the whole teleportation thing strikes me as a genius device for exploring Davey's character and resilience. The "government gets involved" elements were climactic in the plot, but they weren't the point of the story.

I knew when they fired the teenaged actors they originally had hired to play David and Millie, and hired Hayden Christensen and Rachel Bilson, that the film was going to be very different from the book. I'm not yet sure how I feel about that, but I am making a huge effort to remain open-minded because the author has been very involved in the whole process. He has even written a new book about a new character - "Griffin"- who appears in the film but not in the original book. I tell myself that it will all be fine, just ... new. I'm attached to the original characters and approach, you see. I adore Davy and always have. I'm a big fan of MIllie's, especially after reading the sequel, "Reflex" in which she steps front and center. I'm afraid that in my mind's eyes she doesn't look/act/sound anything like Rachel Bilson, or any role that Rachel Bilson has ever played. *shrugs* Hayden, on the other hand will be just fine, I'm sure, once I get used to the idea that Davey is not 17 when all these things happen to him. Hayden does haunted/hunted really really well.

But yeah - like you, I'm very very curious about this film and will be there for the first show of the day it opens, I'm sure.

The official movie website is great, by the way.

I have definitely been in that exact situation with the Harry Potter movies. I loved the books long before they were made movies and long before they became internationally popular. The movies, I resented. I resented the actors who played Harry [where's the crazy hair? the green eyes? why isn't he short dammit!], Hermione [Emma is just too beautiful], or Ron [don't let me even start on how stupidly Rupert consistently portrayed my favourite Weasley]. I resented the changes to the plot; I resented the changes that were not made to the plot... The list goes on.

*sigh* Right now, I'm very excited about seeing another Hayden movie, and even more thrilled it has Rachel Bilson in it. The Summer character kept me watching the O.C. long after the show had lost its original high standards. However, I know what it feels like to face the possibility (and probably the reality) that the original text will not be preserved in the transition from book to movie. I hope for your sake and the sake of all the book fans that the losses and the additions will not make the movie too unappealing for you. I know I'm still to overcome my dislike for the HP movies.

Nice caps. I hadn't seen those yet.
I too am excited for the movie.
This one looks like it will actually see the light of day.
I seriously believe we will get to see Jumper before Hayden's shelved movies (Virgin Territory and Awake).

Rats! I had totally forgotten about Awake. What the H--- happened there? I thought the movie was primed to be a big seller with him starring opposite Jessica Alba?

Another Hayden flick. it's about bloody time.
I haven't seen Factory Girl either.
IMDB is full of morons who have no lives.

Haven't seen Factory Girl, either, although I'd like to hear more about the movie he did with Jessica Alba a while ago. Haven't heard anything about that in a long time.

This movie looks kinda interesting, but its release date falls into a slot where the studio doesn't expect much. I might see it (the official website has a nice design), but I'd prefer to see a trailer before I make any concrete decisions.

I'm looking forward to this myself.

You and me both. It'll be great to see Hayden and Rachel on the big screen.

Erm... Is it bad that I've never heard of this film/book?

(Though I've picked up a bit from other people's comments, and it does sound interesting.)

Heh. At this rate, I'm going to get myself kicked off your friends list. ;)
moonspinner From: moonspinner Date: August 22nd, 2007 12:33 pm (UTC) (Link)

Don't be silly! I'd probably never have heard about the story if Hayden C wasn't acting in the movie!
